What is Power Raking and is it necessary?
Power raking is the mechanical removal of thatch and moss from the lawn. Too much thatch can block air, water, and essential nutrients to get deep into the soil, which in turn affects the health of the grassroots negatively. Over time, the lawn starts looking lifeless and loses all its vigour. If your lawn feels spongy under your feet, then it’s definitely time!
It is recommended that this procedure be completed every 3rd year in the Spring followed with an application of moss control. It removes the built-up layer of dead grass and moss and improves the health and appearance of the lawn. It is also helpful when done prior to topdressing and reseeding an area. Removal of thatch prevents fungal and bacterial diseases from developing in your lawn.
The ideal time for this procedure is later part of April once the lawn dries out but before it gets too hot.
